Hi, Tulsans!
PSA: Late June through early July is the optimal window for planting pumpkin seeds. This timing ensures a full growing season before the first frost, which typically occurs in late October (USDA zone 7a). We're stocked with Jack be Little Pumpkin seeds from Sow the Magic, hurry in for yours!
How to Plant Pumpkins
Soil Requirements: Use well-drained, fertile soil with full sun exposure. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.8.
Planting Depth: Direct sow seeds 1 inch deep.
Spacing: Space vining varieties 4–6 feet apart; bush types 2–3 feet apart.
Watering: Water deeply once or twice a week. Avoid wetting foliage to reduce risk of mildew.
Ecological Benefits
Pollinator Support: Pumpkin flowers provide essential nectar and pollen for native bees, especially squash bees (Peponapis pruinosa), which are specialized pollinators.
Soil Health: Their dense foliage acts as a natural mulch, reducing soil erosion and suppressing invasive weeds.
Low-Waste Crop: Nearly all parts of the plant are compostable or edible, minimizing agricultural waste.
Health Benefits
Pumpkin is a nutrient-dense food, offering:
Beta-Carotene: A precursor to vitamin A that supports vision, skin integrity, and immune health.
Antioxidants: Including lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been linked to reduced inflammation and eye protection.
Minerals: Pumpkin seeds (pepitas) are rich in magnesium, zinc, and plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, supporting cardiovascular and neurological health.
Summary
Planting pumpkins now supports both human health and ecological sustainability. With proper timing and soil conditions, pumpkins are a practical addition to any garden or urban farming initiative. Their environmental and nutritional value makes them a strong candidate for both home use and local food systems.
